The Thermostat’s Housing Is Rusted

You want to have the thermostat replaced as soon as possible because, eventually, the thermostat will die and your engine will overheat all the time. We will talk more about this below. One of the first signs that the thermostat is going bad is rust on the thermostat housing. This is an indication that coolant is slowly leaking out of the coolant valve and settling around the housing. The only way to determine this leak is to inspect the thermostat because the coolant will not drip on the garage floor.

The Thermostat Is Leaking Coolant

If you are unaware that the housing is rusted, the coolant will start to eat through the metal of the housing and damage the thermostat. Consequently, this will cause a thermostat leak that you will know about because you will have coolant on the garage floor. As we mentioned above, you do not want your car’s engine overheating all the time. If the thermostat is leaking the coolant, the level will get too low and the engine will start to run too hot, even if you add coolant to it.

The Engine’s Temperature Keeps Changing

Adding coolant to the engine when the thermostat is leaking does not retain the optimal level because the coolant will simply leak out of the thermostat. The thermostat can also affect the engine’s temperature by refusing to release the coolant when it needs it. This is a sign that the thermostat is malfunctioning. Generally, what happens is the thermostat becomes unable to determine the engine’s temperature accurately. Consequently, it releases the coolant sporadically and the engine’s temperature keeps changing.

The Engine Overheats All the Time

Finally, all of these things can make your engine overheat every time you drive your automobile. It’s important to note that if you drive the vehicle when the engine is too hot, you run the risk of damaging it by cracking the head gasket, the exhaust manifold, or the engine block.
