There are several warning signs that will tell you that your car needs new brakes. You may not need a complete brake overhaul; it could just be one set of parts that needs to be replaced. Either way, Dad’s Automotive can help. We are going to list the signs of brake problems below.
ABS or Brake Warning
Vehicles these days are equipped with anti-lock brake systems. You have an ABS light on your dashboard that will turn on briefly when you first start your automobile. If this light turns on at any other time, the anti-lock brake system is experiencing problems. You may also end up with an illuminated Brake light if the brake system is going bad and you don’t have an ABS light.
Leaking Brake Fluid
Brake fluid can leak out of the master cylinder, so this can be a sign that it’s time to replace the master cylinder. You can also leak out of the brake hoses, and, as such, replacing the hoses will be in order to correct the problem. Brake fluid is light brown to dark brown or red and tends to leak around your wheels.
Loud Brake Noises
Loud brake noises such as squealing or grinding are an indication of brake problems that need immediate attention. For example, if your brakes or squealing, they could be overheating. Grinding noises indicate the brake pad surface is gone and you need new brake pads.
Overheating Brakes
As we just mentioned, squealing brakes are overheating brakes. If your brake system is overheating when you use it, there is a problem. Another sign that your brake system is overheating is burning smells coming from the brakes when you press down on the brake pedal.
Pulling to the Side
If your automobile pulse to the side when you apply the brakes, the calipers probably need to be replaced. This is a service that is generally done every 75,000 miles. The pulling indicates that one of the calipers is stuck in your vehicle will pull in the direction of that wheel.
Soft or Spongy Brakes
Your brake pedal should always give you resistance and stop at about 1 1/2 inches from the floor. If the pedal feels soft or spongy or sinks all the way to the floor, you have brake problems that need immediate attention.
Wobbling or Vibration
Finally, your vehicle should not wobble or vibrate when you apply the brakes. If it does, it’s possible that you have a rock stuck in a caliper or warped rotor surfaces.
